Survey Meter Calibration
Overview

BTI is a licensed facility that calibrates and/or verifies the calibration of gamma-, neutron-, and beta-detecting survey meters. All work is performed within a quality management system that is ISO 9001 certified by BSI under certificate number FM 502976. Certain survey meter calibrations are performed in accordance with the ISO/IEC 17025:2005 International Standard, General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories.

All calibrations and verifications of calibrations are conducted in accordance with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s Licence Application Guide: Nuclear Substances and Radiation Devices, REGDOC-1.6.1, version 2, April 2017, Appendix Z: Regulatory Expectations for Calibration of Survey Meters, with the following exceptions:

  1. The uncertainty in some calibration distances may be greater than 2% (beta calibrations only); and
  2. Due to source availability and decay, some calibrations cannot be verified at 20 to 25% and 75 to 80% of each range or decade. Contact BTI to obtain current dose rate capabilities.

All calibrations and verifications of calibrations use reference standards that are traceable to the SI through the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) or the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
